Heart Defect Facts
Congenital Heart Diseases refer to structural or functional heart diseases which are present at birth. Some of these may be discovered later, primarily seen in neonates, infants and children. Peadiatric Cardiac care in India is still in its infancy.
Nearly 180,000 children are born with CHD each year in India. The burden of congenital heart disease in India is likely to be enormous, due to a very high birth rate. Nearly 1/3 to half of these CHD are critical. Over 75% of infants born with critical heart disease can survive beyond the first year of life and many can lead near normal lives after open heart surgery. When a child has been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, it means he or she was born with a problem in the heart's structure. The news that the child has a congenital heart defect probably made the parents anxious and worried about the child's immediate and long-term health.
